‘My Period Diary’ is a new tool for young women to develop more awareness and connection to their menstrual cycle. It has been designed by Sara Harris, Complementary Therapist specialising in Women’s health, with particular interest in the health and wellbeing of young women. She is also the founder of the Girl to Woman Project, and along with a team of men and women is bringing us the first Girl to Woman Festival launching in Lennox Head in January 2015.

Here our G2W Blog asks Sara some questions about the ‘My Period Diary’ and the importance of supporting young women in the phase of just starting their period, understanding what changes are now happening, and feeling what is going on during their monthly cycle.

Sara, Can you tell us about ‘My Period Diary’?
"My Period Diary" is a beautiful tool for young girls/women to support a re-connection back to their bodies. This 3-month workbook is beautifully laid out and designed in a way to encourage an inquiry into the feelings, emotions and other bodily signals that are communicated by the body each and every day.

"When given the opportunity to connect, girls can re-discover the innate qualities that they carry, where they feel more confident and at ease with just being themselves"  – Sara Harris

What's inside 'My Period Diary'?
It's a 3-month workbook that asks specific questions so that girls can become more aware of themselves from day to day, whilst also seeing the patterns from month to month. At the end of the workbook, there is a summary section to reflect on any patterns that are noticed and any awareness of how things could be different next time round. In the front of the diary we have some beautiful cycle images, to explain the incredible ebb and flow that happens in the body from month to month. "We want girls to see how amazing their bodies really are and how their menstrual cycle is something to appreciate and value rather than hide or deny".

"This diary is a celebration of every girl - her body, her menstrual cycle and of the woman she is unfolding into. She is so precious and so beautiful and she deserves to know this preciousness and this beauty, bringing them with her into the woman she will one day be" – Sara Harris

Where did the inspiration to create ‘My Period Diary’ come from?
Looking back now, I would have really benefited from some more support in understanding all the changes that my body went through as I made that change in becoming a woman. A big part of this was getting my period. Back then, I was a bit scared of it arriving and when it did, I got this awful back pain every month for the years that followed. I thought to myself 'this is not very cool at all!'

I would have been so grateful to know what I know now back then! Now, I have learnt about my body, how it works, the intricate ways the hormones respond to each other and I have gotten to know the feelings that come and go throughout the month too. I just feel connected to me and that is so awesome!

In understanding my body and the incredible ebb and flow that happens through the month, I also began to appreciate how awesome my body is at communicating to me. It has so much to say, every single day, through the entire month and I learn so much from this. I begin to really know what my body needs and how I need to look after myself. I know when I need to take it easy and rest more and I know when I have more energy to be out and about. I even notice that my body needs different types of food and at different times of the month too. This is so valuable and supports me immensely every day.

Through the amazing support of the teachings from Universal Medicine, I was able to re-connect back to the truth that my body was communicating and the truth that it naturally emanates, especially when I choose to honour it. This, I am very grateful for and it all just makes so much sense. Natalie Benhayon and her creation of the Our Cycles App, took it all to a whole other level of connection when I got to feel and understand the energetic flow of my cycle and how this affects the quality I live as a woman. The 'My Period Diary' was inspired by the Our Cycles App and made possible by Natalie Benhayon. These tools and the teachings offered through Universal Medicine and Esoteric Women's Health make it possible for true role models to emerge and be a leading example in what is the most natural way for all women - one that is connected, deeply nurturing and unreservedly honouring.
