Rumi's Everyday

Picture
Meet 11-year-old Rumi, who shares with us his thoughts on role models.

Rumi: I'm Rumi and I’m awesome, amazing, fantastic, adventurous and joyful. I like to play, I like board games, TV, sport, playing handball and cooking, especially desserts and snacks. I like animals, wildlife and nature. I like pranks and spying.

What is a role model?
A person you look up to or an adult. A person that looks up to you. A Teacher. Older kids or people. Being a role model means people looking up to you. Being proud of yourself.

Who are your role models?
My mum because she shows me the way. My Dad because he shows me how to play music. My sister Olive because she is amazing. My dog Honey because she keeps me entertained.

Whose role model are you?
My sister. My step brother Alexander. My dad. My mum. Because my awesome-ness is inspiring. My brightness. My intelligence. My looks. My steadiness.

Rumi is one of my 10 grandchildren, he is the second eldest. Since this young man has come into my life I have had quite a few moments when he has expressed something truly amazing to me.
Once my husband and I were gardening, we used to have different ideas about what we liked and what we wanted to do. Rumi and I went in to get some morning tea for everyone and he expressed to me how he felt that my husband and I were fighting.
I went to say to him that we were not fighting and in that moment I knew exactly what he was saying. Even though there were no harsh words or any actions that indicated that were not together, he could feel how we were not on the same page. We had different ideas and each wanted to have their own way. This was such an enlightening moment for me as I had never considered that other people could feel the tension that I was feeling between us. I just knew that whenever we gardened together we felt a bit at odds with each other. Since that day we no longer have that tension when we garden, after talking, we realized that we can have different ideas about what we like but when we work together it naturally ends up being what we both like.
What a truly amazing reflection this was for me. One of many and I'm sure there are more to come.
With love Nanny.
